Mastery-based learning is an instructional approach where students need to demonstrate a deep level of understanding of a topic or subject area before progressing onto another topic or subject area.  This enables students to move forward in their learning at their own pace as they master content rather than based on traditional time structures.

  • LEVEL 1: UNDERSTANDING: You know a little about the topic / program / appropriate tools to be used, it's connection to other topics / programs / appropriate tools to be used, and maybe some of the key concepts of how to use the programs to achieve your goals.

  • LEVEL 2: BASIC COMPETENCE: You have a solid understanding of the key concepts.

  • LEVEL 3: FLUENCY: You are fully capable of using the tools of the program to show understanding and the ability to teach others how to utilize the program or tools within the program.

  • LEVEL 4: CREATIVITY: You show a unique ability to extend the program or the tools of the program in order to apply it to other areas of interest or work. Additionally, you are able to self-evaluate your work and analyze your performance.

  • LEVEL 5: MASTERY: You are an innovator and show excellence in all areas.
